At Calleo, we believe in using our platform to support causes that matter. As part of our commitment to social responsibility, we’re shining a light on charities doing essential work in our communities. One of these is Sisters Incorporated, a shelter offering care, counselling and safety to survivors of domestic abuse. By sharing their story, we hope to raise awareness and encourage support for the life-changing work they do.
In communities across South Africa, too many women and children face the harsh realities of domestic violence, abuse and stigmatisation. These aren’t just stories in the news – they’re the lived experiences of our neighbours, colleagues, and loved ones.
In fact, 1 in five partnered women have experienced physical violence by a partner. Taking a closer look at Saferspaces report on Gender-based violence in South Africa, it’s reported that “between 25% to 40% of South African women have experienced sexual and/or physical IPV in their lifetime.”
As stakeholders continue to petition the government to take a greater stand against those who perpetrate these offences, organisations such as Sisters Incorporated take a stand and fight the good fight.
Sisters Incorporated is committed to standing with survivors and walking alongside them as they begin the difficult journey of not only healing but equipping themselves with skills for their role in society.
For over 60 years, Sisters Incorporated has been a safe haven for women and their children. Their work is rooted in compassion, dignity and empowerment. When someone arrives at their door, they’re often at one of the most vulnerable points in their life – fleeing violence, fear and hopelessness.
What Sisters Incorporated offers is a temporary crisis stay for up to 28 survivors at any given time. Each woman and child are welcomed into a warm, secure home where their basic needs are met, and so much more. For three months, they are provided:
However, we know keeping this shelter operational is no easy feat – the cost of running it is not only high, but the demand is unfortunately going to outweigh the supply or accessibility.
It costs approximately R10,000 per person per month to provide this level of comprehensive care. That cost covers more than just accommodation, but also healing, transformation, and the chance to build a new life.
They can’t do it alone. You alleviate some of the pressure.
Your donation helps them remain a lighthouse in the storm – a beacon of hope for women and children who are escaping unthinkable situations. By sponsoring a survivor’s stay, you give them more than shelter – you give them a second chance. How can you help?
